The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is described as an acute lung injury, with pulmonary edema and severe hypoxemia, associated with high mortality rates (10-90%,mean=50%), depending upon its etiology. Although ARDS had been described for 30 years, its several aspects such as definition, physiopathology and adequate treatment still remain unclear. The purpose of this paper is to describe an updated review of the clinical, radiologic and physiopathological aspects of ARDS, in order to enhance the knowledge on this syndrome and to provide the guidelines of the therapeutics, and mechanical ventilation techniques used to assess these patients.
