The Laughter of Porta dos Fundos during the Early Months of COVID-19 Lockdown

This study seeks to identify the function of laughter, as theorized by Mikhail Bakhtin, during the first five months of the COVID-19 pandemic, from February to June 2020, in the work of the Brazilian comedy collective Porta dos Fundos on YouTube. The central hypothesis is that, through its distinctively satirical and ironic mode of humor, the collective mobilized laughter as a lens through which to present an alternative and critical perspective on the pandemic. In this sense, this narrative device is understood in this study as an agent of transformation and destabilization, capable of challenging the prevailing social order and opening up new possibilities for understanding and interaction.
