Abstract

The purpose of the following article is to situate the commercial coastwise navigation in the era of Dom João VI within the broader frame of the Brazilian economy connected mainly with exportation. This peculiar situation is presented through the direction of the activity of the main ports and of their commercialized products. Also taken into account are documents of the laws of this period showing the ambiguities of the policies of Dom João VI which oscillated between the liberal measures expressing British interests and the corresponding mercantile measures of the aspirations of Portuguese interests.
