Abstract

Brazilian Historiography has incorporated the stereotype about lhe reclusion of women, in the nineteenth century. Research about foreign travellers, that arrived in Rio de Janeiro, from 1801 to 1900, suggested (as the analysis of the books of Rose de Freycinet, Maria Graharn, Mine. Langley Dufresnoy, Baronesa de Langsdorff and Ida Pfeiffer in the article bellow shows) that inner and closed spaces, have always been preferencial feminine spaces, in almost all social groups, and were neither specific of Ibero-brazilian behavior, nor so generalized as has been long accepted.
