Abstract

This article analyzes the relationships between the material aspects of the mirror, its uses and meanings, and the way in which material culture produces and sustains everyday practices. It seeks to demonstrate that the mirror was a central object for the construction of a notion of femininity, associated with self-observation, particularly since the 18th century. From a theoretical and methodological point of view, it is intended to bring contributions to the understanding of materiality as an important dimension of life and social processes.
