A list of the fishes known from the coast of brazil

Abstract

The present account is an attempt to list in condensed form the known coastal fishes of Brazil. These reach the total of 578. Under each is given the several localities from which they have been reported. Most of the species described from or confined to this region of Brazil have the original citation, while others are given with the author and date of publication, and ali included in parenthesis. Ali these may be located in the three volumes of Dean^ "Bibliography of Fishes" to 1921. Since then the source of the others may be located scattered through the Zoological Record. A very extensive summary of the lite[1]rature is finally given by Ribeiro in his "Fauna Brasiliense — Peixes" (Arch. Mus. Nac. Rio de Janeiro, vol. 21, 1918, pp. 7 to 228). The "pri[1]meira parte — Resenha histórica" lists in sequence each author writing on Brazilian fisheh. The "terceira parte" though called "bibliographia e indice" is first a systematic list of species with synonyms and refe[1]rences. In my list of species following the scientific name are verna[1]culars as given by Ribeiro. The main purpose of the present work is to afford a ready clue to the literature dealing with the large shore fauna of Brazil. The prepa[1]ration of the list was prompted by a suggestion of the late Dr. Rodolpho von Ihering during his last visit to the United States. It is hoped therefore that it may be of value as a basis for future studies, es[1]pecially in the many problems of geographic distribution. With this largely in mind I have given a brief discussion and tabulated invento[1]ry according to the various families represented.
