This paper details the evolutionary history of a Pleistocene marine deposit on the Caraguatatuba coastal plain on the basic of its sedimentaiy characteristics and structures. This deposit is correlated with the Cananéia Formation; its top is situated about 5 to 6 m above the present sea levei. Outcrops show a basal layer of gray muddy sands, followed by a thick sequence of yellowish to light-brown, fine to very fine sands. Sedimentaiy structures indicative of a beach environment are abundant. Burrows of Callichirus major are especially concentrated in the uppermost portion of the deposit. This deposit originated through the development and landward migration of low longshore bars
