Abstract

This paper presents the results of a magnetic prospection made in the region situated between Nova Era and Itamarandiba districts, State of Minas Gerais. The most recent geological study of this region, that belongs to the Group Minas and in part to the Group pré-Minas, is due to Pflug (1965). The magnetic anomalies were classified in three types: (1) the Cauê type, (2) the Boa Esperança type and (3) the canga type. The exceptional magnetic anomalies caused by the canga deposits were interpreted as due to the existence of a strong magnetic supergene iron mineral: the maghernite. An aerial magnetic survey covering the area detected about 20 magnetic anomalies, almost of them corresponding the magnetite-itabirite bodies. The most important contribuition of the rnagnetic prospection deals with the possibility of fmding the lirnits of the iron occurence in a short time and by a considerably reduced costs.
