Abstract

Local concentrations of caliche-like limestone deposits were found in the Uberaba (State of Minas Gerais) and Agudos (State of São Paulo) regions, Brasil. These limestones were formed in fluvial-lacustrine environment and belong to the Upper Cretaceous (Senonian? ) Bauru Formation of the Paraná Intracratonic Sedimentary Basin. The chemical composition of the limestone samples in major, minor and trace elements were determined. Carbon and oxygen stable isotopic compositions were also analysed in comparison with caliche samples from Africa. The fresh-water deposition, perhaps under a dry clima te, of these sediments was confirrned by the analysis. A genetic relationship between the limestones and the underlying basaltic rocks was also suggested.
