Abstract

A 28-m sequence of Itararé group at Fazenda Goulart, São Jerônimo, RS, Brazil, was logged in detail, consisting of two clear fining-up cycles. A lacustrine environment, modified periodically by fluviatile or fluviodeltaic ingressions, could be proposed to explain the cycles. Toward the top of the sequence the lacustrine conditions decreased, allowing the growth of some vegetation, preserved as impressions, in the so called "castanha fades". The analysis of the taphoflora revealed the presence of Botrychiopsis (Kurtz) Archangelsky e Arrondo, Giiropteris Kurr, Rubidgea Tate, Koretrophyllites Radczenco, Cordaites Unger and Cordaicarpus Geinitz, genera quite important for a definition of the Lower Permian in Rio Grande do Sul. The supposed ancestrality of the Taphoflora suggested by the absence of Gangamopteris and Glossopteris does not match the stratigraphic position of the "castanha facies" at the top of the sequence.
