Different genera of Rutaceae have their characteristic pollen morphology. Zanthoxylum, Policarpus, Esenbeckia and Helietta belong to the basic 3-colporate, reticulate or reticulate-striate pollen type. On the other hand, Galipea and Angostura present more than one pollen type, so that a taxonomic revision seems to be necessary. The pollen type for Hortia also occurs in other genera; the one from Decagonocarpus is the same as that for the genus Adiscanthus. The morphologically more complex pollen types belong to the genera Almeidea and Erythrochiton. Balfourodendron and Rhabdodendron are well characterized by their own pollen morphology.
