Abstract

This visual essay explores glaciers as sites of interdisciplinary inquiry, blending artistic research and scientific study to illuminate their materiality, history, and the impact of climate change. Centered on the Schlatenkees glacier in Tyrol, Austria, the project draws on fieldwork and the study Evolution of debris cover on glaciers of the Eastern Alps, Austria, between 1996 and 2015 (Fleischer et al., 2021). It examines glacial retreat through sensory and creative methods, producing artistic outputs such as zines, collages, and experimental audio recordings. These artistic outputs juxtapose scientific findings with emotional and symbolic narratives, reimagining glaciers as more-than-human entities and repositories of cultural memory. The essay situates glaciers within global ecological crises, highlighting their dual roles as fragile ecosystems and metaphors for collective grief and transformation. By bridging data with storytelling, the project fosters a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of glacial changes and human action, urging collective responsibility for preserving these vital natural archives.
