Abstract

This dossier on Art and Science Worlds in Times of Ecological Urgency seeks to shed light on the generativity of contemporary co-creations established between artists and scientists. Through very diverse paths, methods, and collaborative relationships, the visual essays gathered in the dossier present creative processes that mobilize photography, sculpture, performance, collage, drawing, and embroidery, raising crucial questions about a series of issues such as multi-species relationships, the colonial logics and dynamics that constitute the ecological crisis, the ethical problems and responsibilities involved in research relationships, the situated instances of the notion of collaboration, among many others. In general, all the works point to the need to elaborate alternative stories and to the centrality of interdisciplinarity in the face of the multiple and multifaceted problems posed by the ecological crisis.

Author Biographies

  • Caroline Spitzner, Universidade de Radboud

    PhD candidate in Art and Philosophy at Radboud University in Nijmegen (Netherlands). Working at the intersection of Metaphysics and Philosophical Anthropology and Art and Cultural Studies, her current research focuses on contemporary art that addresses the irreducible relationship between colonialism and ecological crisis. Her overall work has emphasized the body and performativity, more-than-human relationships, and environmental issues. Her academic output ranges between Post-Humanist Feminist Theory and Anticolonial Theory.

  • Joaquim Pereira de Almeida Neto, Universidade de São Paulo

    PhD candidate in Social Anthropology at the University of São Paulo and researcher for the FAPESP thematic project Métis: Arts and semantics of creation and memory. His research focuses on more-than-human collaborations and plant agency in art and science projects.

  • Juliana Ramos Boldrin , Universidade Federal de São Paulo

    Postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Social Sciences at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), conducting research on the toxic living conditions that characterize the present ecological crisis, focusing on air pollution. She holds a Master's and Doctorate in Social Anthropology from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). Her work addresses the intersections between health and science, focusing on the following themes: politics of respiration and the atmosphere, the body, access to healthcare, technoscience, care, and contemporary forms of managing life and death.
