The originary division of the social: Lefort contra Marx

This article addresses the concept of “social division”, or “division of the social”, as formulated by Claude Lefort. Beginning with a confrontation between Lefort and Marx, it aims to clarify the meaning of this concept, further articulating it with another fundamental Lefortian notion: the “democratic revolution”. Finally, at a third level of analysis, the article seeks to relate these two concepts, exploring some of the sociological and political consequences that emerge when they are considered together.
