This article discusses the practices of charity associated with the matter of child abandonment, and in this sense the intervention in the relationships between mothers and children, especially those promoted by the Santa Casa de Misericórdia. A Santa Casa de São Paulo, in accordance with its principles of mercy, iintroduced a Baby Hatch in 1825, that was gradually known as a local for dangerous infants, and no longer for infants in danger. The State would be awarded custody of these children considering that they would be “under the effect of the parents’ absence”.
