Abstract

Lisbon, 1939. In the middle of World War II, the Portuguese capital had already become the only European city where allies and Axis powers could operate in broad daylight, monitoring each other and placing the city at the center of the international espionage map. . This true film noir setting – like Casablanca – served as a stage for behind-the-scenes maneuvers, betrayals and tumultuous romances, promoted by refugees, bankers, diplomats, writers and artists who crossed paths in hotels and cafes in the city center, at the same time. I fear that the country became rich by hiding gold bars stamped with the Nazi insignia.
