The sociocultural adaptation of migrant communities involves the acquisition of sociocultural competencies when encountering a new culture, particularly in terms of community involvement, interpersonal and intercultural communication, and public dealings. This process implies a psychological adjustment that influences individuals' well-being. This study aime to analyze how sociocultural adaptation influences the emotional regulation of Portuguese emigrants in Mexico. The research, employing a cross-sectional and descriptive approach, utilized a quantitative methodology with 79 convenience-selected participants. They were assessed using the Sociocultural Adaptation Scale (SCAS), the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and a questionnaire on sociodemographic and migratory situational variables. The main results indicate that increased age is significantly associated with lower levels of sociocultural competencies. Additionally, women and individuals with prior intercultural experience demonstrated higher community involvement. Furthermore, more public diligences and community involvement were associated with increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. In conclusion, while this community develops intercultural competencies through cultural learning, interaction with the host society may intensify emotional regulation challenges, thereby impacting migrants’ mental health.
