This work is an excerpt from the dissertation by Karoline Santana Guimarães, examining the relationship between cultural heritage and political memory in Volta Redonda, with a focus on the Memorial 9 de Novembro. It highlights the city as the backdrop for significant political events, such as the 1988 Strike, and aims to comprehend the intricate connections among memory, city, and heritage, particularly concerning the identity of Southern Fluminense workers. The analysis extends to other monuments, including El Dourado Memória, Antônio Tavares, and Monumentos das Castanheiras Mortas, showcasing heritage as a tool for resistance and identity assertion. The city and its heritage are viewed as a battleground for political contention, emphasizing the pivotal role of heritage representation in constructing historical narratives.
