This is a translation of the chronicle "Chez l'Illustre Écrivain" by Octave Mirbeau (1848-1917), published on 28 November 1897 in Le Journal. The text marks Mirbeau's involvement in the fight to review the trial of French officer Alfred Dreyfus, unjustly convicted in France of the crime of high treason. A journalist, pamphleteer, art critic, novelist and playwright, one of the most interesting and original figures in French literature of the Belle Époque, Mirbeau joined Émile Zola and other writers of the period in the battle to correct one of France's greatest miscarriages of justice. He was part of the group called the Dreyfusards, who, following the publication of Émile Zola's letter to the President of the Republic Félix Faure in the newspaper L'Aurore on 13 January 1898, also became known as the 'intellectuals'.
