In an exclusive interview given to Comunicação & Educação, Prof. Dr. Guillermo Orozco Gómez, researcher of the reception processes and of the communication/education fields, makes a brief report on his academic background; on his interest in education for the media, most especially on the interrelationship there is between children and television, based on the family and school contexts. Gómez gives his point of view on the role the school and the teachers have, stressing the need to rethink their backgrounds. He also emphasizes the priority of the needs students have in order to, based on them, use new technologies in school, inverting, therefore, that has been done by the governments. The author talks about the importance of the State and of the society in the creation and maintenance of public spaces, resisting the privatization and merchantableness ideology. He also claims that the school has lost its hegemonic role in society and that in order to recover it, it is necessary to know how to share and coexist with other cultural institutions.
