Abstract

The 1980s are remembered in the field of heritage preservation in Brazil as a time when new asset categories were added to the country’s cultural heritage register. In addition to improving the representativeness of different social groups in the heritage list, the preservation of workers’ villages, warehouses, factories, markets, railway stations, quilombos and candomblé temples also brought to light new issues. However, this conceptual renewal was never fully implemented, as the procedures and management of the heritage list continue to be carried out on a discretionary basis, without dialogue or negotiations with local agents. This paper aims to examine this issue based on the questions concerning the listing of a workers’ village in the city of São Paulo. To that effect, it presents the most recent initiatives to engage the local population, sponsored by the municipal cultural heritage preservation agency.
