“I have fear, therefore I live”: from Roland Barthes to Paloma Vidal

The parody of the Cartesian cogito, “j’ai peur, donc je vis” is enunciated by Roland Barthes in “L’image”, in Prétexte: Roland Barthes colloque. Paloma Vidal borrows this sentence to close her cartonero book Não escrever, in which Barthes appears as a character also as a reference for her narrative. The fear is a subject in Não escrever, built mostly by Vidal’s reading of the œuvre barthésienne and by her interest in the biographical events of Barthes's life. This essay will engage discussions from “La Peur” (2018), by Tiphaine Samoyault, and notes from a selection of Barthes' writings, particularly Mourning journal (2011), Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes (2017)and “L'image” (2002b).
