This paper investigates representations of the feminine in horror literature by analyzing the character Eleanor Vance, from the novel “The Haunting of Hill House”, by American novelist Shirley Jackson in 1959. To do so, the social aspects and the narrative resources used in its construction are examined. The work is based on a bibliography that addresses authors such as Ellen Moers (1976) and her formulations of female gothic; Dara Dowey (2014), to talks about Jackson’s literature and Antonio Candido (2006), whose thinking underpins the integrative analysis between work and social environment. Finally, the article suggests that the narrative elements that make up the character align with the social values of the production context of the work.
