“Blood is Money” was the first course in the postgraduate program on Literary Theory and Comparative Literature that Antonio Candido taught as part of the “Politics and Literature” discipline, taught in the Maria Antonia building, occupied by students from the School of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters, in 1968. The course’s teaching plan organizes the reading of one of Shakespeare’s plays, King Richard II, with the students. The purpose of this article is to understand how Antonio Candido organizes his reading of the barbarity generated by the blows to the power of command in an archaic society, through the reading of a dramatic-literary work of art whose guiding axis is the question of the legitimacy of power. Anger is the great allegory of this action, as it foresees the application of violence for justified purposes. The aim of this analysis is to associate the allegory of anger with the process of constructing the reading of the literary work in teaching situations. The document referring to Antonio Candido's lesson planning is part of his Textual Collection deposited at IEB/USP.
