This article aims to evidence the relations developed between madness and love in two short stories of Caio Fernando Abreu. I intend to discuss the concept of madness and the procedures which make it possible to explain the arising of the passional effect as a result from the contest between the modalities of the wanting to be, having to be and being able to be. Thus, I hope to show that madness is one of the faces that love embodies in the contemporary literature.
