Abstract

The poetry of the Portuguese authors Manuel Gusmão and João Miguel Fernandes Jorge is known for the relation between arts. Because of that characteristic, this essay has the purpose to discuss how image is evocated by the poetic word, specially when we have in mind the ekphrasis concept. Initially understood as the verbal representation of a visual representation, the notion is still on discuss, usually for be associated to mimesis. With the purpose to make this article possible, we’ve selected two poems, one written by Manuel Gusmão and another, by João Miguel Fernandes Jorge. On the first, titled only as XXIV, published by Jorge on Mãe-do-fogo (2009), we can see a clarealy relation with one of the fotos of O amor na margem esquerda, of Ed van der Elsken. The second one, written by Manuel Gusmão, evokes Garota comendo pássaro, a painting of René Magritte. Therefore, with the relation between word and images on mind, this article tries do discuss how ekphrasis could be noticed on those two poems.
