This paper aims to confront “O direito à literatura” [On the Right to Literature] with other texts written by Antonio Candido, such as “Literatura de dois gumes” and “Perversão da Aufklärung” [Aufklärung's Perversion], to then situate some of the current difficulties in the field of literary theory regarding the theoretical approach on other textual and cultural forms, such as rap and the Carta Guarani Kaiowá, exploring, on the one hand, the “crisis of value” in “immanent reading” and, on the other hand, the right to literature as the right to read a document as literature in an article by Marília Librandi-Rocha. More than proposing a solution to this standstill, I wish to demonstrate some of the limitations in current literary theory, pointing towards the necessity of new critical and theoretical frameworks.
