We propose a review of the analysis of the different trends of classicism between the 16th and 18th centuries in the context of the history of criticism. If, on the one hand, the study of this period was deemed as an “antiquarian task” by the historiographic proposal of René Wellek due to the similarity of the sources and principles that underlie the reception of the texts, we argue that the common textual origin is not capable of ensuring the contortions to which the classical doctrine was subjected. To demonstrate this, we will examine the relationship between the criteria for the elaboration and appreciation of poetry, as exposed by the treatises and arts of poetry from that period, and the classical authorities whose ideas they claim, in the light of a reassessment of the Aristotelian notion of topics.
