Shadows of the Grotesque: violence and Horror in Lord of the Flies, by William Golding

This paper article to analyze the representation of the grotesque in The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, since this work represents, through the presence of shocking expressions and plot, situations of conflict between conventional social laws and the creation of a new world, a familiar but strange one. Thus, first we are going to show the trajectory of this grotesque as a concept, this would take in to consideration the changes and variations and its meaning through the ages. In the second moment, we will discuss the grotesque world in the work under study, exploring how the rupture of childhood produces a violent and horrific scenario in the narrative, as well as the metaphors that symbolize the grotesque and the grotesque language of the work. In this study directed for this purpose, research was conducted from theories and studies of Kayser (2013), Hugo (2014), Bakhtin (2010) and Sodré and Paiva (2014). With this work, it is possible to verify that the grotesque is in all narratological aspects of The Lord of the Flies, leading the reader to reflect on human nature, fears, horrors and violence that surround us.
