This article aims at discussing the short story The Canterville ghost, by Oscar Wilde, first published in 1887. The focus is on a critical reading that discusses the parody of aesthetical features of the gothic tradition in literature. In Wilde´s narrative, clichés, elements of the narrative space, atmosphere and common characters of the gothic novel are used, but the author subverts them, transforming them in comic resources through irony and paying homage to the whole gothic tradition that came before his time. The study is based on theories about the modern and the post modern parody considerations from Linda Hutcheon (1978) and Walter Moser (1992).
