Literacy and English language teaching in the languages without borders

Abstract

One of the courses for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) of the Brazilian project Language without Borders includes Literature as a specific area, which aims to teach students how to identify and understand literary genres, terminology of this area and to develop critical reading. However, there are not many studies focused on this field. Therefore, this experience report shows how the development of didact material and lesson planning can promote literary literacy through English Language Teaching. Based on the theory of Genre Pedagogy for language teaching, on reading strategies for understanding texts in foreign language and on strategies for promoting literary literacy, the course developed enabled students to read two specific genres, short stories and poems, including the comprehension of their particularities, as rhetorical moves, structural organization and lexicogrammatical aspects. In conclusion, this study might motivate other teachers to use literary texts in their English language classes for exposing possibilities on how to do it.

    Gustavo Sontag é graduando do sétimo semestre de Letras-Inglês pela Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (RS) e membro do grupo de pesquisa Shakespeare e as Modernidades (UERJ).

  • Angélica Micoanski Thomazine, Federal University of Santa Maria

    Doutora (2019) e Mestra (2015) em Estudos da Tradução pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (PGET/UFSC); Graduada em Letras - Português/Inglês pela Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná - Unioeste (2010); atualmente exerce o cargo efetivo de Professor de Magistério Superior no Departamento de Línguas Estrangeiras Modernas (DLEM), em regime de Dedicação Exclusiva, na Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM), em Santa Maria, RS. Coordena o Projeto de Extensão LI Kids - Ensino de língua inglesa para crianças; colabora no Projeto de Ensino IsF - Idiomas sem Fronteiras, da UFSM, e no Projeto de Extensão (evento) Seminários Abertos das Letras da UFSM. Realiza pesquis na área de Tradução Literária, Literatura Nonsense, Língua e Literaturas de língua inglesa, vida e obra do escritor norte-americano Edward Gorey e Ensino de Língua Inglesa para diferentes contextos, atualmente com ênfase no Ensino de Língua Inglesa para crianças. Membro dos grupos de pesquisa GrAELL (UFAC), e no Grupo de Estudos Linguísticos, Literários e de Tradução (IFAC). Tem experiência no ensino de Língua Inglesa, Literaturas de Língua Inglesa, Sintaxe, Fonétia e Fonologia da Língua Inglesa, Ensino de Língua Inglesa Instrumental, Estudos da Tradução e Ensino de Língua Inglesa para crianças.
