The serpent tongue of Eliane Marques: pretugués as the core of a border literature in dialogue with portuñol

Abstract

This article explores hybrid linguistic forms as a poetic and aesthetic device in Louças de família (2023), a novel by Brazilian writer Eliane Marques. Focusing on the author’s engagement with Portuñol and Pretuguese, the study reflects on how these hybrid forms of language can be understood as a "serpent tongue," in the terms proposed by Chicana intellectual Gloria Anzaldúa. Methodologically, the article analyzes excerpts from the novel in which Spanish and Portuguese blend together and elements that align with Lélia Gonzalez’s notion of Pretuguese emerge. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the discussion draws on references from linguistics, comparative literature, and feminist criticism. The article concludes that Louças de família is not only set in a geographic borderland but also translates this liminality into its very use of language.

    Doutora em Educação (FaE) pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). Mestre em Letras - Língua Espanhola e Literatura Espanhola e Hispano-Americana pela Universidade de São Paulo (2010) e Mestrado Profissionalizante na Área de Novas Tecnologias, pelo Instituto Universitario de Posgrado (Espanha). Licenciada em Letras pela Universidad Nacional de Rosario (2003). Atualmente é Professora de Língua Espanhola como língua adicional na Universidade Federal da Integração Latino-Americana (UNILA) no Ciclo Comum de Estudos. Atúa na posgraduação no Programa de Literatura Comparada (PPGLC) da UNILA e no Programa de Posgraduação em Ensino da Unioeste. Foi pró-reitora de Assuntos Estudantis da UNILA (2019-2023). Foi Vice-diretora Instituto Latino-Americano de Arte, Cultura e História - ILAACH. (2017-2019). Foi Chefa da Seção de Mobilidade na Pro-reitoria de Relações Internacionais e Institucionais (2014-2015). Foi Coordenadora do Núcleo de EAD da UNILA (2016-2017). Foi Professora na Universidade Tiradentes, em Sergipe, participando da área de educação a distância, e Professora da Faculdade Pio X, também em Sergipe. Foi professora do ensino médio no Centro Federal de Minas Gerais (CEFET MG). É membra do GT A Mulher na Literatura: crítica feminista e estudos de gênero da ANPOLL. Coordena o Grupo de Pesquisa Estudos transfronterizos: línguas, educação, politica e literaturas na margem, participa como pesquisadora do Grupo Mulheres na edição do CEFET MG. É escritora de livros infantis.Tem interesse nas áreas de ensino de espanhol como língua adicional, portunhol, literaturas translingues, literatura e edição desde uma perspectiva de género.

  • Lívia Santos de Souza, Federal University for Latin American Integration

    Possui graduação em Letras Português/Espanhol (2011), mestrado (2014) e doutorado (2018) em letras neolatinas, todos pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Escrita de autoria de mulheres, Espanhol como língua de herança, Literatura Latino Americana e Estudos Latino Americanos nos Estados Unidos (Latinx Studies). Atualmente é professora adjunta na área de Línguas Adicionais na Universidade Federal da Integração Latino Americana (Unila) e docente permanente no Programa de Pós-Graduação Interdisciplinar em Estudos Latino Americanos (IELA) e no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura Comparada (PPGLC). Possui ainda experiência internacional, tendo atuado como Fulbright Visiting Scholar na Columbia University onde desenvolveu um projeto sobre ensino espanhol como Língua de Herança nos Estados Unidos e no Brasil. É vice-líder do grupo de pesquisa GEPALC - Gênero e Poder na América Latina e Caribe, editora da revista Frontería e coordenadora da Cátedra Gloria Anzaldúa, vinculada ao IMEA (Instituto Mercosul de estudos Avançados).
