Ethico-Political Dimensions of Listening to Trauma in the Context of Human Displacement: Where Is It That Fosters the Here?

This article offers an ethical-political reflection on human displacement through the articulation of literary narrative and critical analysis. Drawing on the figuration of the “ruin-body” embodied in the fictional story of João, a forced migrant, the text explores how experiences of migration and refuge intertwine with aesthetic and subjective dimensions, producing metaphors that challenge borders, memories, and identities. The fictional account, grounded in elements of clinical practice with immigrants, is mobilized as a literary strategy capable of giving visibility to lives marked by precarity, trauma, and exclusion. At the same time, the essay discusses the epistemological and political implications of listening to migratory suffering, considering ruins as a form of memory and resistance. In this movement, literature and critique converge to interrogate the colonial-capitalist effects on displaced bodies, problematizing categories of humanity, belonging, and alterity. Thus, the narrative of João who is not from here calls for rethinking travel as an experience of symbolic creation, border displacement, and the production of new modes of existence.
