The article proposes a reading of Carta de viaje (1989), a work by Chilean poet Elvira Hernández, in which the lyrical subject travels to Sweden in search of her brother. Along this journey, oblique spaces emerge that engage with experiences of violence, traces of the military dictatorship, and the dilemmas of democratic transition, as well as historically fractured identities and the profound differences between the two countries. In a writing of inviability and invisibility, Hernández explores vertiginous and ironic poetic procedures, among other twists of language. The study seeks to introduce the figure of Elvira Hernández, to highlight how the work strains genres associated with intimacy, such as the letter and the diary, destabilizing and reinscribing them within a poetic key, and to synthesize the relation the travel establishes between body, identity, and landscape.
