Abstract

This essay confronts the work Alves & cia, by Eça de Queirós, and the play Viva o casamento!, by Fernando Gomes, in search of capturing the relevance of intertextuality as an instrument of modernization and increment on the representation of Portuguese identity. The queirosian novel is transformed in a comedy that questions the ideas presented in the model and gives them new meanings. To create humor, the new frame uses ambiguities and puns that point to the other valued theme of Modernity: the relevance of the linguistic creation as a medium of manipulating or recreating reality.
