Militarização e desdemocratização ao longo dos governos chavistas na Venezuela

Abstract

This article analyzes the process of militarization and dedemocratization in Venezuela throughout the governments of Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro. We note that since the beginning of Chávez’s government, the military have received incentives to participate in politics in the institutional spheres and have gained greater prominence within the government coalition especially after the failed coup attempt against Chávez in 2002. Under Maduro’s administration, ties between the government and the military have strengthened, which, on the one hand, has ensured Maduro’s survival in power, amid a deep economic crisis and attacks by opposing groups to overthrow him, but on the other hand contributes to the corrosion of the country’s democratic system. The methodology used was Content Analysis, through which we examined academic articles and journalistic texts produced on military issues and democracy in Venezuela
