This paper examines whether participation in global value chains (GVCs) confirms the international division of labor between goods and knowledge-producing countries (2006–2015), using a dynamic panel for 54 countries. Countries’ specialization as net knowledge exporters/importers was found to influence intellectual property payments, trade balance, and GVC sophistication. Developed countries export knowledge (positive intellectual property balance, decreasing backward participation), while developing countries, as knowledge importers, export goods, with generally positive trade balance and increasing backward participation via foreign value added, reinforcing the international division of labor and technological divergence.
