Carl Schmitt and Hannah Arendt have different views regarding revolutions and constitutions, although both converge in presenting a reductionist reading of Rousseau. The aim of this paper is to point out how the reading of Rousseau, Sieyès and the constituent power Schmitt offers in his Verfassungslehre (theory of the constitution) somehow intersects with the view Arendt herself has on the French Revolution, despite she gives a different answer to the “constitutional paradox.” Finally, an interpretation that addresses Rousseau’s ambivalences allows us to distort that reading and recover the republican sense of his political philosophy.Downloads
