Revisiting the “longer way” and the “shorter way” in Plato’s Republic

Resumo

At some moments of the Republic, character Socrates refers to two “ways” to reach some important objectives explained in the dialogue, a shorter one and a longer one. The present article explains what these two paths are, by presenting i) the previous context for the “paths” in the text of the Republic; ii) the objectives attributed to the ongoing discussion; iii) how the notion of “paths” emerges in the text; iv) the characterization of both, the shorter and the longer way; v) the explanation why the discussion must follow the shorter one; vi) the assessment of some of the main interpretations of the issue in the scholarship. The paper concludes that Socrates and his interlocutors could not follow the longer way because it is not available for them.

  • André Luiz Braga da Silva, Universidade Estadual do Norte do Paraná

    André L. Braga da Silva é pesquisador do pensamento grego antigo. Possui Pós-Doutorado (Centre Léon Robin / Sorbonne Université) e Doutorado (Universidade de São Paulo) em Filosofia. Publicou dezenas de artigos sobre filosofia grega nos mais importantes periódicos do meio.

    Possui experiência de magistério na Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro.

    Representou o Brasil nos últimos congressos da International Plato Society - IPS (Georgia, 2022; Paris, 2019; Brasília, 2016), da International Society for Socratic Studies  - ISSS (Houston, 2022; Buenos Aires, 2018) e da International Association for Presocratic Studies  - IAPS (Delphi, 2022), das quais é membro ativo.

    Seus artigos sobre o "Parmênides" e o "Sofista" de Platão foram selecionados para publicação nos livros de estudos sobre esses diálogos editados pela International Plato Society (Academia/Nomos Verlag – volume sobre o "Parmênides": 2022; volume sobre o "Sofista": no prelo).

    Em 2022, foi aprovado em 2o. lugar no concurso para Professor de História da Filosofia Antiga da Universidade de Brasília (UnB), e em 2o. lugar no concurso para Professor de História da Filosofia da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).

    Em 2023, foi aprovado em 1o. lugar no concurso para Professor de História da Filosofia Antiga e Medieval da Universidade do Estado do Norte do Paraná (UENP).
