This contribution focuses on Plato's Phaedrus palinode; in particular, it aims to draw attention to the fact that the life of the intellect (the charioteer) manifests itself physiologically through the body of the lover. The intellect of the palinode is not a mere faculty, but an agent capable of feeling dismay and desire, emotional states that are mirrored in the physiology of the body. Insisting on this physiological aspect of the intellect's workings can be very useful because it helps to dismantle the widespread representation of Platonic thought known as austere dualism.
