This paper argues for two highly debatable readings of the argument in Parmenides’ “Way of Truth”: (1) “Is” (B2.3) does not refer to the physical world; and (2) to auto (B3; B8.34) establishes the identity of knowledge and the known. A standard interpretation of the “Way of Truth” leads to an appraisal of the influence of its main tenets on the Greek cosmologists, the sophists and Plato. I aim at suggesting that “thinking” less than a faculty should be seen as an epistemic perfect state; and “being” as the unity of what can be thought of, of which Aristotle’s “productive thought” would be a late echo.Downloads
