In this paper I attempt to show why the role of flux in Theaetetus 151-160 is exclusivelyexplanatory. I show that Plato uses material from Heraclitus’ flux (H) in order to create forProtagoras (P) the best available argument which can grant infallibility. In the first part of thepaper I discuss, briefly, some controversies about two problems: how Plato is establishing theconnections among the three theses and how he understands flux. In the second part I proposean analysis of 152a-c. On section III I give an explanation of 152c-157c, from the perspective ofsome passages that, in my view, are sufficient for to get the core meaning of flux in the SecretDoctrine and, in the final section (IV), I briefly resume the substantial virtues and defects ofPlato’s argument for Protagoras.Downloads
