Use of capital letters in the novella Statira, and Zoroastes, by Lucas José d’Alvarenga (1826)

This article aims to describe and analyze the use of capital letters on the first novella published in Brazil – Statira, and Zoroastes (1826), written by Lucas José d’Alvarenga. We listed, quantified and ranked every occurrence of capital letters using the functions proposed by Meier (1948): structuring (related to visual and syntactic aspects) and semantics (related to the particularization of some nouns and the emphasis on certain semantic fields). In the structuring function, the use of the capital letter was categorical. However, in the semantic functions (individualizing, hierarchical, and distinctive), there were oscillations, although the analysis showed that the use of the initial capital letter was not random nor restricted to spelling: it relates to the major themes of this novella: politics, nobility, war, knowledge and feeling. Thus, the capital letters were mainly of semantic order, used to cover most of the relevant themes of Statira, and Zoroastes.Downloads
