This article investigates how surrealist aesthetics are appropriated, modifi ed, and disseminated on Instagram, analyzing the effects of artifi cial intelligence (AI) and algorithms on the production and circulation of images. It begins by addressing the problem of algorithmic aestheticization as a device that reconfi gures notions of curation and aesthetic value. I argue that AI, far from representing an innovation, operates as a technology of repetition, reiterating visual conventions and narrowing the sensory experience. The investigation focuses on the hashtag #surrealism as a portal for discovering a type of softened, plasticized, algorithmically domesticated aesthetic production. The research contributes to debates on technological imaginaries by proposing a critical reading of AI-mediated visual production, with attention to the dynamics of aesthetic repetition, symbolic disputes over visibility and the contemporary reconfi guration of art worlds.
