The Celestial Rose and Il Fiore: a reflection about the semantic of the flower in the works of Dante Alighieri.

Abstract

In Brazil, not much has been discussed about Il Fiore, a translation by Dante Alighieri of the Roman de la Rose, an important book for the medieval literary culture. This resistance may be due to the fact that there is no consensus reguarding the authorship of the translation of the text, if it is in fact made by Dante. However, Gianfranco Contini, an important Italian literary critic, says that Dante was, above all, an experimentalist in the art of writing, so there would be plenty of reasons to attribute the authorship of Il Fiore to Dante. Furthermore, there are occurrences of rhymes and lexicons that are repeated in The Divine Comedy. The research was conducted based on texts that address various aspects of the works cited. During Dante's literary journey, we can observe a change in the meaning of Dante's use of the term 'flower' throughout his works: in Il Fiore, the poet's youthful work, it was a carnal metaphor for a woman, while at the end of the Comedy, in the last of the heavens, the Flower that blooms is the Celestial Rose, seat of the blessed ones.
