Abstract

In this paper, after the inclusion of Ovid’s Ars amatoria in the ancient literary branch of didactic poetry, we try to demonstrate why this poem shall not be considered as an example of true loving teaching. Thus, strange elements such as lies, mutually recommended to men and women as part of their strategies of seduction; treasons that they must endure when confronted with the magister amoris; and ironies that they may submit themselves to as learners force us to consider the text as a meta-literary exercise about the art of Roman love elegy.
