The purpose of this work is to point out a set of pragmatic, semantic and syntactic variables which determine the omission - a form of non-realization of non-anaphorically recoverable verbal complements. From an analysis of 1669 occurences of verbal complements, extracted from nineteen inquiries in the project PORCUFORT (Português Oral Culto de Fortaleza), I concluded that the pragmatic variables Activation State and Idenfiability are the ones which most condition the phenomenon, for they are the ones which most reflect the speaker’s intentionality. These factors interact with various conditioners of semantic-syntactic nature, especially those linked to relationships between predicates, semantic Junctions and syntactic functions. Besides, this work adds, to these answers, a series of reflexions about clause transitivity with omission and about the criteria for the distinction between obligatory and optional complementsDownloads
