Abstract

Our essay presents H. C. Andersen's fairy tale Dryaden / The Dryad tale along with references to other Andersenian tales, where a tree plays a central role within the narrative. Seen from an ecocritical approach, the story takes a critical stance towards the triumph of modernity in nineteenth-century Europe.
