Abstract

This article presents a interpretation of “O espelho”, by Machado
de Assis. The modern short story is related with the Brazilian
slavery. At first we discuss some of the previous readings of
Macha do (Augusto Meyer, Raimundo Faoro, Alfredo Bosi, B.
Abel Baptista and John Gledson). Following the Machado de Assis’ short story is seen as modern expression referred to the turn of Brazilian historical ground.
