The construction of the Americanophile literary network of D. Pedro II from his process documents

This article aims to analyze a set of autograph documents produced by the second and last emperor of Brazil, D. Pedro II (1825-1891), which denotes the interest and intimate relationship of the Brazilian monarch with North American intellectuality and culture from the 1850s. The genetic dossier, consisting of letters, excerpts from his diaries and autograph manuscripts, allows us to glimpse the influences received and transmitted between the Brazilian empire and the North American republic, as a result of the social interactions established by D. Pedro II with the foreign cultural elite. The monarch's literary production, materialized in translation exercises, constitutes a relevant aspect in this dynamic of relationships and first intellectual exchanges of D. Pedro II, since it allowed the emperor access to prestigious authors in the American literary milieu, especially the poets Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and John Greenleaf Whittier. From the perspective of genetic criticism, these works show the creative continuum and the discursive moments of the avant-text. They can also be considered as primary instruments for sharing aesthetic tastes, reference standards and the emperor's own notion of translation among the members of the Brazilian court.
